Living Way

Living Way has launched its Worker Readiness school!  This is a brief note to share about this new programme and its next few steps.

Worker Readiness School

In researching what South African employers are looking for and what they have struggled to find, we discovered something fascinating.  The greatest need is not hard skills, but rather the soft skills. This started us on a journey of developing the curriculum that is now the Living Way Worker Readiness School.  In order to truly empower people to get a job, keep a job and move up in their careers, we need to address their mindsets, or their thinking.

In the month of April 2010, we piloted this course.  What a great learning experience for all concerned!  We had ten people go through the course and we are already seeing fruit in the lives of the participants.

The content of the training focuses on a mixture of personal development, interpersonal growth as well as some fundamental skills, like interviewing.  All of this has the foundation of God's Word and we run the Alpha Course - a dynamic course teaching the fundamentals of Christianity - as part of the curriculum.

Some of the modules included: Work Ethic,  Values,  time management,  communication,  conflict resolution,  interviewing and resume writing amongst others.

The course runs over 9 full days of training, spread over a three week period.  With homework and tests, we ensure that all are engaging with the material.  It is hoped that attendance to these courses will greatly increase the likelihood of gaining access to employment.

Group workBig smiles on the last day

1 Group and individual work helped with personal reflection and application
2 Nicole, one of the pilot's students. The next step for the students is to apply for jobs and we have seen some progress already.

Asked what they had gained, some participants responded:

+ "I gained hope, forgiveness and taking initiative at a workplace as well as communicating with your colleagues"
+ "How to manage my time and money... and how to be resilient"
+ "To be on time, honest, forgiving, handling money God's way, to communicate well"

Our biggest challenge is to have dedicated staff or volunteers to run this course on an ongoing basis.  We truly believe that God is calling us to empower people in this way and are eager to see it grow.

Points of Prayer

  • For God's guidance and wisdom as we refine the Worker Readiness materials
  • For God's continued provision for running costs and to provide for a full time trainer for the Worker Readiness school.
  • For His blessing in reaching people for Christ.
  • For God's blessing on our campus as the lease comes up for renewal.
  • The Pilot Group on the final day of training
